Valentines, Hearts and Shapes!

We threw in all the shapes this week in preparation for Valentine's day and hearts!  We discussed shapes, played games with shapes, recited poems about shapes, and built different shapes with wooden pieces. During our Valentines week, we sorted, weighed and patterned conversation hearts.  Our dramatic play area turned into a post office in which the students wrote and colored pictures for their classmates then mailed them in the mailboxes. We also copied signs for our post office that said Open, Closed, Mail, etc. Boxes were also weighed and delivered!   We also watched a short video on what happens to mail once it gets to the post office.

During gym we did some valentine yoga and jumped over hearts on the floor. We also looked at playing cards that had hearts on them. If we picked a 4 of hearts, for example, we did 4 jumping jacks and so on. We signed in by answering what was our favorite shape. We counted and compared the numbers.  Other activities included hanging hearts on a clothesline with clothespins, making a mail truck, recognizing numbers using daubers, and making a special Valentine present for you!

Our letter this week was A for apple, alligator and Ava.  We enjoyed singing along with our letter A video! We also looked at the difference when making the letter A and a triangle. We continued to talk about being brave.  The students came to the front of the room during group time and we read the hearts you sent from home of how they were brave!

We also sang some fun songs to go with our theme.  We showed what roses and violets looked like as they recited the "Roses are Red" poem.  Using the tune of "Bingo", we sang about hearts.  (There is a shape that means love, and heart is its name-o, H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T, and heart is its name-o).  Our shape poems are as follows:

Suzy Circle, Big and Round.  All I do is roll around!

Tommy Triangle, Proud as can be. Count my sides 1, 2, 3.

Sandy Square, Is my name.  My four sides are all the same.

Ricky Rectangle, Don't get me wrong.  2 sides short and 2 sides long.

Please practice these at home.  It is a fun way to help the students learn the shapes!!

Questions to ask your child:
1. What shapes did we learn this week?
2. What is your favorite shape?
3. What job did you have this week?
4. From our shape poems, what is Ricky's whole name?  (Ricky Rectangle)
5. Sandy has fours sides that are all the same. What shape is she? (square)

**We encourage you to have fun with your child while driving around, pointing out objects/signs in the environment and asking your child what shape they are.
