Hippo Headlines: 2026-04-05

We had another great week with robots! We continued strengthening our fine motor muscles by using pipettes, sorting screws into funnels, using grabbers, putting together robot puzzles, patterning robots, creating robots with play-doh, making robots out of snap bots, transforming alphabots, painting robots on foil, creating robots with a variety of materials, playing a robot racing probability game, putting together robot puzzles, making patterns using paint and gears, rhyming words from our stories, weighing and sorting bolts and screws, using paint daubers to paint a robot, using pipettes and colored water to make oil pads, using robot arms (grabbers) to pick up items and building with little legos, pipes and blocks! Our hippos practiced numbers with our robot race game and letters on our robot poster! (goals: following directions, respectful behaviors, taking turns, using words to solve conflicts, number recognition, counting, answering questions about our stories, fine motor, gross motor, letter recognition and sound, patterning, making decisions independently)

The students voted on their favorite robot book and If Your Happy and You Know It Robot book was the winner! This gave us the opportunity to recall the books and to compare numbers. Another favorite included playing the Rock'em Sock'em Robots game! We enjoyed MIP, the dancing robot, again! During gym, we did robot yoga and used special shoes to pretend to walk like a robot. To end the week we named our large robot we made out of recycled materials and listed his special powers!! Each child named a different special power. (goals: taking turns, comparing numbers, recognizing numbers, following 2 step directions, voice volume, confident behavior)

Our letter this week was Z for zebra. We went over the sound and thought of things that start with the letter Z. During our last 2nd Steps lesson we reviewed all the skills we learned this year!!

5. What was your favorite robot activity? (building, Mip the robot, using grabbers, playing with magnets, putting together puzzles and gears, playing Rockem Sockem Robots)

6. What color was MIP's belly when he would whistle? (yellow)

Things to do at home:
Continue creating robots or other things at home with recycled materials! When finished have the children talk about their creations!
