We threw in all the shapes this week in preparation for Valentine's day and hearts! We discussed shapes, played games with shapes, recited poems about shapes, and made shape art with large cardboard stencils. During our Valentines week, we sorted, made towers and patterned conversation hearts. In addition, we decorated our valentine boxes and picked up heart erasers in our sensory table that contained red water. Our dramatic play area turned into a post office in which the students wrote and colored pictures for their classmates then mailed them in the mailboxes. Boxes were also weighed and delivered! We also watched a short video on what happens to mail once it gets to the post office.
During gym we jumped over hearts on the floor. We also looked at playing cards that had hearts on them. If we picked a 4 of hearts, for example, we did 4 jumping jacks and so on. We signed in by answering what was our favorite shape. We counted and compared the numbers. Other activities included making a mail truck, recognizing numbers and letters using daubers on hearts, sequencing the steps of mailing a letter, playing a shape applesauce game and making a special Valentine present for you!
Our letter this week was A for apple and alligator. We enjoyed singing along with our letter A video! We also looked at the difference when making the letter A and drawing a triangle. We continued to talk about being brave. Our 2nd Steps lesson focused on how to invite others to join in play.
We also sang some fun songs to go with our theme. We showed what roses and violets looked like as they recited the "Roses are Red" poem. Using the tune of "Bingo", we sang about hearts. (There is a shape that means love, and heart is its name-o, H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T, and heart is its name-o). Our shape poems are as follows:
Learning goals: making decisions independently, answering comprehension questions from our book, using correct voice volume, following 2 step directions, shapes, letters, numbers, patterning, resolving conflicts, brainstorming how to solve problems, gross and fine motor, sorting, respectful behavior, sensory
